đŁ Before Your Trip
Why should I use a professional charter service?
Using a professional charter boat with an experienced, U.S. Coast Guardâlicensed captain, not only ensures a safe trip, but also tips the odds in your favor of catching a lot of fish. These Captains do this for a living, some of us are out 7 days a week. We share information with other Captains, so we know where the fish are every day. Our boats are rigged with the latest fishing and electronic equipment, and our fishing tackle is easy to use and kept in excellent condition. The Migrator is out 7 days a week.
What if I have never fished before?
Donât worry, our fishing tackle is easy to use and fully capable of handling the biggest fish in Lake Michigan. Captain Caleb will walk you through everything, from how to use the equipment to tips on fighting the fish.
Weâre here to give you the experience you want. You can be as hands-on or as relaxed as youâd like throughout the trip.
How many people can I bring?
In compliance with the Coast Guard Regulations, we may carry a MAXIMUM of six (6) passengers.
Is there an age limit for bringing children?
Give us a call and letâs talk about it. Every child is different, and we want everyone to have a great experience on the water.
In general, children under 6 may not fully enjoy the trip, and it can be a long day for them (and for others on board). For kids age 10 and under, we recommend one adult per child so they have the support they need to stay engaged and have fun while fishing.
Do you offer accommodations for guests with mobility needs?
Weâre happy to discuss your specific needs. Every situation is different, and we want to create the best experience possible.
While the boat is not fully ADA accessible, we can often support guests who are able to manage a 2-step entry onto the boat and can assist with transfers when appropriate. At this time, weâre not able to bring wheelchairs on board.
Please reach out before your trip so we can talk through your needs and determine whatâs possible.
𧞠Licenses & Requirements
Is a fishing license required?
All persons age 16 or older are required to have a fishing license. You can purchase these licenses online or at any Walmart, Bass Pro Shop, Cabelas, Ace Hardware, etc. If you already have a State of Illinois Fishing License, you must also have the Lake Michigan Salmon Stamp.
đ Location & Logistics
Where are you located?
We are located at NorthPoint Marina, Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. NorthPoint Marina is very accessible from I-94. Located about 35 miles North of Chicago, it has some of the finest Salmon and Trout fishing in Lake Michigan.
Where should we stay if we are coming from out of town?
If you need lodging we recommend The Inn on Sheridan in Zion, IL. Call to book under our discount with Northpoint Charter Boat Association.
Where do we park at the marina?
Parking is available at North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. The marina has convenient parking areas near the docks, making it easy to unload your gear and meet Captain Caleb at the boat.
𧢠What to Bring & Prepare
Do I need to bring any fishing equipment?
No. All fishing equipment is provided for you on board the boat. All our equipment is easy to use and in excellent working order.
What should I wear?
Weather can change quickly in the Chicagoland Area, so we recommend bringing some warm clothing and rain gear. Remember, it is always cooler on the water in the spring because of the water temperature. Please wear soft â solid shoes (tennis/sport/deck shoes) on board.
Do we bring our own food and refreshments?
Yes, also bring a small cooler with ice to keep it in. Alcohol is allowed providing you are 21. Please bring cans instead of bottles because of the possibility of glass breakage.
Do we need to bring a cooler for the fish?
Yes. We recommend bringing a cooler in your vehicle to transport your cleaned fish home after the trip.
đ During the Trip
How far do we go offshore?
The reason I keep The Migrator at Northpoint Marina, is the close proximity to deep water and fish. During certain times of the year, we start fishing at the harbor mouth, and we rarely go out farther than 5 miles. Less running time means more fishing time for you! However If we need to run the Migrator is extremely fast and efficient with twin 440hp Yanmar Diesels Engines.
What happens to the fish we catch?
Captain Caleb will store your catch on ice during the trip to keep it fresh until you return to the marina. All fish caught within legal limits are yours to take home. Fish cleaning is available on board for $2 per fish, or you are welcome to clean them yourself if you prefer.
What if someone gets seasick?
Lake Michigan is often calm, but conditions can vary. If you are prone to motion sickness or concerned about it, many guests choose to take an over-the-counter remedy such as Bonine or Dramamine before their trip. Getting a good nightâs sleep, eating lightly beforehand, and staying hydrated can also help you stay comfortable on the water.
đ° Policies & Guarantees
No Fish - No Pay?
âNo Fish, No Payâ guarantee is good for 8 hour charters only. YES, THAT IS RIGHT -FREE!  Offer null and void if you show up late for your scheduled 8 hour charter time or if you decide to cut your trip short and go in to shore.
Do we tip the Captain?
Gratuities are always appreciated if you have enjoyed your trip and expect the memories made to last! Â Our goal is to give you and your friends/family the best fishing experience available on the lake.
â Booking & Weather
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety always comes first. If weather conditions are unsafe for fishing, Captain Caleb will contact you to reschedule your trip. Lake Michigan conditions can change quickly, so the final decision is made the day of your charter based on current forecasts and lake conditions.
What time should we arrive?
Please plan to arrive about 15â20 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This allows time to meet the captain, load your belongings, review safety information, and depart on time so you can enjoy the maximum amount of fishing.
How long are charters?
Charter lengths vary depending on the trip you book. Migrator Charters offers several trip options, including half-day and full-day charters. See Rates or Book a Charter for more details.Â
